چکیده

Ammonium (NH4) toxicity is an issue of global ecological and economic importance. In this review, we discuss the major themes of NH4 toxicity, including the occurrence of NH4 in the biosphere, response differences to NH4 nutrition among wild and domesticated species, symptoms and proposed mechanisms underlying toxicity, and means by which it can be alleviated. Where possible, nitrate (NO3) nutrition is used as point of comparison. Particular emphasis is placed on issues of cellular pH, ionic balance, relationships with carbon biochemistry, and bioenergetics of primary NH4 transport. Throughout, we attempt to identify areas that are controversial, and areas that are in need of further examination.

Toxicity of pesticides to plants and non-target organism: A comprehensive review

Abstract Pesticides are agrochemical used to increase agronomic production and higher economic profit. However, these chemical pesticides could be persistent in soil and water, collective in silt or bio-aggregates in biota relying upon their dissolvability, prompting various kinds of natural contamination. These pesticides have also shown detrimental effects such as phytotoxicity, genotox...

NH4 + protects tomato plants against Pseudomonas syringae by activation of systemic acquired acclimation

NH4 (+) nutrition provokes mild toxicity by enhancing H2O2 accumulation, which acts as a signal activating systemic acquired acclimation (SAA). Until now, induced resistance mechanisms in response to an abiotic stimulus and related to SAA were only reported for exposure to a subsequent abiotic stress. Herein, the first evidence is provided that this acclimation to an abiotic stimulus induces re...

Altered Cell Wall Plasticity Can Restrict Plant Growth under Ammonium Nutrition

Plants mainly utilize inorganic forms of nitrogen (N), such as nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+). However, the composition of the N source is important, because excess of NH4+ promotes morphological disorders. Plants cultured on NH4+ as the sole N source exhibit serious growth inhibition, commonly referred to as "ammonium toxicity syndrome." NH4+-mediated suppression of growth may be attributa...

Competition between uptake of ammonium and potassium in barley and Arabidopsis roots: molecular mechanisms and physiological consequences

Plants can use ammonium (NH4+) as the sole nitrogen source, but at high NH4+ concentrations in the root medium, particularly in combination with a low availability of K+, plants suffer from NH4+ toxicity. To understand the role of K+ transporters and non-selective cation channels in K+/NH4+ interactions better, growth, NH4+ and K+ accumulation and the specific fluxes of NH4+, K+, and H+ were ex...
